Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsJust like the Sydney Cricket Ground crowd, who rose to applaud as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma embraced after sealing a nine-wicket win against Australia in the third ODI last week, the scenes in the commentary box were equally emotional, with even seasoned voices visibly moved by the moment.
A viral video shared by SEN Cricket captured one Australian commentators standing in tears as his colleague paid tribute to the Indian legends.
“Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma on their last night in Australia. Not even Mick Jagger and Keith Richards could have played it better. Kohli and Rohit...the night is theirs. Rohit, 121 not out. Kohli, 74 unbeaten, as India win by nine wickets,” Gerard Whateley said.
The third ODI in Sydney saw Rohit and Kohli stitch together a 168-run unbeaten partnership for the second wicket in just 170 balls, taking India to 237 for one in 38.3 overs.
Former Australian pacer Trent Copeland highlighted the magnitude of the moment, praising Kohli after he surpassed Kumar Sangakkara to become the second-highest run-scorer in ODI history.
“You got to pinch yourself occasionally, don’t you Whitey? That we're here for this moment. This guy has been at the centre of seismic shifts in cricket. Unquestionably the best one-day record,” Copeland said.
While Australia won the three-match series 2-1, Rohit and Kohli’s innings thrilled the Sydney crowd, blending nostalgia, brilliance, and emotion.
Social media erupted with tributes, calling it “the end of an era” and “a moment to remember for decades” — with fans agreeing, saying “this is exactly what they earned”.
Kohli and Rohit are next set to play in the ODI series at home against South Africa, starting mid-November.
