The incident took place in Chandarpur village, where Purushottam, a young man who had been missing for two days, was mistakenly believed to be dead.
Mistaken identity after body found in a well
According to Surajpur Superintendent of Police Santosh Mahato, police had recovered the body of an unidentified man from a well in the Manpur area on Saturday. To identify the deceased, police informed nearby regions, including Chandarpur.
Purushottam’s family, who had been searching for him, went to the police station and identified the body as his. The police then registered a case, handed over the remains to the family, and the body was buried with full rites.
Shock at the funeral
As relatives and neighbours gathered to mourn, a family member suddenly arrived with astonishing news Purushottam was alive and had just returned home.
SP Mahato said the family was left speechless when they saw him in person. The house, which had been filled with grief moments earlier, quickly turned into a scene of joy and disbelief.
Police investigate
While the family celebrates Purushottam’s return, police now face a new mystery — the identity of the man who was buried by mistake. Authorities have kept the deceased man’s clothing and personal belongings for investigation.
Police stated that if needed, the body will be exhumed for further forensic tests to determine who the unknown person actually was. The case has been reopened for detailed inquiry
