According to reports by Bangkok Post, May had been receiving treatment for an inflamed large intestine and had initially taken medical leave from September 5 to 9. During this period, she was hospitalised for four days and advised to spend two more days recovering at home.

On September 12, when May requested further sick leave due to her deteriorating health, her manager denied the request and instructed her to return to work. Despite her worsening condition, she reported for duty. However, after only 20 minutes on the factory floor, she collapsed.

May was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors performed emergency surgery but she succumbed to complications from necrotising enterocolitis.
