What is Digipin and how is it an improved version of PIN code?
Digipin (Digital PIN) is a digital geospatial addressing system developed by the Department of Posts (India Post) in collaboration with Geospatial Delhi Limited and other stakeholders. It assigns a unique digital address to every property or dwelling in India using latitude and longitude coordinates, enabling accurate location identification beyond the limitations of the traditional PIN code system.
Limitations of the traditional PIN code system
- The current Postal Index Number (PIN) code, introduced in 1972, is a 6-digit system that identifies a postal delivery area rather than a specific address
- For example: One PIN code can cover thousands of households, spread over multiple villages or urban sectors
- It does not offer precision at the household level
- It is not useful for digital navigation, e-commerce deliveries, or emergency response systems
Features and benefits of Digipin
Feature | Digipin | Traditional PIN code |
Coverage | Individual house, shop, property | Postal area (multiple households) |
Precision | Accurate geolocation (latitude-longitude) | Broad area-based |
Type | Digital and geospatial | Numeric and postal |
Utility | E-commerce, navigation, governance, emergency services | Postal delivery |
Integration | Can be linked with Aadhaar, land records, property tax | IDs limited to postal use |
Major advantages
Accurate delivery: Helps logistics and e-commerce services reach exact locations.
Smart governance: Enables digital mapping of homes for better urban planning and welfare delivery.
Disaster management: Aids in real-time location sharing for rescue and emergency response.
Property verification: Useful in legal and administrative identification of households.
Ease of navigation: Can be integrated with Google Maps and other digital platforms.
How can we find our Digipin?
Official portal or App: The government is planning to launch a dedicated portal or integrate with existing India Post or Bhuvan GIS platforms.
Using coordinates: Once launched, you will enter your address or drop a pin on a digital map, and the system will generate your unique Digipin.
QR code generation: Some versions may allow generation of a QR code linked to your Digipin for easy sharing.
Can we know the exact location of our house with Digipin?
Yes. Digipin is designed to pinpoint the exact geolocation of your house using spatial technology. Unlike PIN codes, which may cover several kilometres, Digipin provides a one-to-one match with a property, which can be viewed and shared digitally.
Relevance in governance and development
Digital India: Supports the mission by bringing postal addresses into the digital ecosystem.
Urban planning: Helps municipal bodies in zoning, property tax collection, and infrastructure mapping.
Smart cities mission: Integrates seamlessly with smart address systems and GIS mapping.
Inclusive governance: Ensures rural and semi-urban households are digitally locatable.
