US President Donald Trump has imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, taking it to 50%, citing India’s continued purchases of Russian oil.

This move, adding to an existing 25% duty, comes as Trump warned of broader "secondary sanctions" on nations trading with Moscow.

When asked why India was being targeted while others like China continue similar energy deals, Trump replied, “It’s only been 8 hours. You’re going to see so many secondary sanctions.”

On being asked, 'Indian officials have said that there are other countries that are buying Russian oil, like China, for instance. Why are you singling India out for these additional sanctions', US President Donald Trump says, "It's only been 8 hours. So let's see what happens. You're going to see a lot more...You're going to see so much secondary sanctions."

India, calling the tariffs "unfair and unjustified," vowed to protect its national interests and accused the US of double standards, noting America's own ongoing imports of Russian uranium and other goods.

Experts warn the dispute could unravel decades of US-India ties.

India had earlier condemned Trump’s remark, when he reduced traffic by 10 per cent on Pakistan, suggesting India would someday buy oil from the neighbouring country.
