6.2 magnitude earthquake rocks Turkey's Istanbul

No immediate reports of damage

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 has shaken Istanbul, Turkiye's emergency management agency says. There were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.2 and a shallow depth of 10 km, according to the United States Geological Survey. Its epicentre was some 40 km southwest of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara.

It was felt in several neighbouring regions, reports said. Turkiye is crossed by two major fault lines and earthquakes are frequent.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake on February 6, 2023 - and a second powerful tremor that came hours later - destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 southern and southeastern Turkish provinces, leaving more than 53,000 people dead. Another 6,000 people were killed in the northern parts of neighbouring Syria.

The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising five eminent persons as trustees.

Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the newspaper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
