India deported groups of Rohingya Muslims by land and sea, the UN human rights chief said on Monday, voicing concern that policies that violated rights of migrants and refugees were becoming normalised in some countries.

“Human rights — all human rights — are the solid foundations of flourishing societies… And yet, disturbing trends that undercut our rights are gaining ground across the world,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said in his global update to the 60th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Türk said policies and practices that violated the rights of migrants and refugees were becoming normalised in some countries.

“Pakistan and Iran have forcibly returned millions of Afghans to their country, and India has also deported groups of Rohingya Muslims by land and sea,” he said.

The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising five eminent persons as trustees.

The Tribune, the largest selling English daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the newspaper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.

The Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
