Tarn Taran bypoll results: AAP clears litmus test as Harmeet Singh Sandhu secures win by 12,091 votes

In Punjab’s Tarn Taran Assembly bypoll, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party’s candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu has been declared the winner after maintaining a steady lead through most of the counting process. SAD’s Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa put up a strong fight but ultimately finished in second place (see vote count below).

Other prominent candidates in the race were Independent candidate Mandeep Singh who had the support of the Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De), Karanbir Singh Burj of the Congress, and Harjit Singh Sandhu of the BJP.

A total of 15 candidates were vying for the MLA's post. The counting of votes for the Tarn Taran bypoll, which began at 8 am here today, was completed in 16 rounds. The counting centre was set up at the International College of Nursing, Piddi.

In the polling on Tuesday, a voter turnout of 60.95 per cent had been recorded. The Assembly seat had fallen vacant after the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June.

AAP's confidence soars

With AAP’s margin expanding after every round of vote count, the party camp has already started expressing confidence about a decisive win in this high-stakes bypoll. The bypoll is being considered a test for Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and the ruling AAP, which has won five of the six bypolls held in the state since taking office in March 2022.
