Indian politics needs transformation, fresh blood to get rid of politics of deceit and foolishness, says PM Modi; invites youth to join politics.
The BJP will form its government in Delhi after a gap of more than 26 years as it won 48 of the 70 seats in the Assembly polls, the results of which were announced on Saturday, while the AAP secured victories from 22 seats and the Congress drew a blank for a third straight time.
AAP candidate from Matia Mahal Aaley Mohammad Iqbal registered the highest victory margin of 42,724 votes in the polls, defeating BJP’s Deepti Indora, according to the Election Commission’s (EC) data.
BJP’s Chandan Kumar Choudhary won the Sangam Vihar seat by the lowest margin of 344 votes.
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) vote share was 45.56 per cent, while the AAP secured 43.57 per cent votes and the Congress’s poll percentage was 6.34.
In the 2020 Delhi Assembly polls, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) got a 53.57-per cent vote share and bagged 62 seats. Despite a 38.51-per cent vote share, the BJP could win just eight of the 70 seats.
In the 1993 Assembly polls, the BJP won 49 seats in Delhi, while the Congress got 14 and the Janata Dal four. Three independent candidates had also secured victories in that election.
The BJP will form its “double-engine” government in the capital as there is a party-led government at the Centre.
BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Tarvinder Singh Marwah emerged as the biggest giant-slayers, defeating AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia from the New Delhi and Jangpura constituencies respectively.
In a fierce contest in the New Delhi seat, Verma secured 30,088 votes, while Kejriwal trailed behind with 25,999 votes. Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit finished a distant third with 4,568 votes.
In another major upset, Marwah defeated Sisodia from Jangpura by a narrow margin of 675 votes. Marwah polled 38,859 votes, while Sisodia secured 38,184 votes. Congress candidate Farhad Suri garnered 7,350 votes.
Amid the BJP’s sweeping victory, Chief Minister Atishi and three ministers in the outgoing AAP government—Gopal Rai, Mukesh Ahlawat and Imran Hussain—managed to secure wins.
Atishi emerged victorious in Kalkaji, defeating BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri by a margin of 3,521 votes. Rai retained the Babarpur seat with a margin of 18,994 votes against BJP’s Anil Kumar Vashisht.
Hussain, the food and civil supplies minister, won from Ballimaran with the highest margin among the AAP’s prominent faces, defeating BJP’s Kamal Bagri by 29,823 votes. Hussain’s victory provided one of the few bright spots for the AAP in the Old Delhi region.
Outgoing health minister Saurabh Bharadwaj was defeated by BJP’s Shikha Roy by a margin of 3,188 votes from Greater Kailash.
BJP’s Mohan Singh Bisht won the Mustafabad seat by 17,578 votes, while his colleague Kapil Mishra secured victory in Karawal Nagar with a margin of 23,355 votes. AAP’s Sanjeev Jha won the Burari seat by a margin of 20,601 votes.
BJP leader Raj Kumar Chauhan, who shifted to the saffron party from the Congress, bagged the Mangol Puri seat by a victory margin of 6,255 votes.
AAP’s Virender Singh Kadian won the Delhi Cantonment seat by 2,029 votes, while his party colleague Kuldeep Kumar defeated his closest rival by a margin of 6,293 votes in Kondli.
BJP’s Ravinder Singh Negi won the Patparganj seat by a margin of 28,072 votes, defeating poll debutant Avadh Ojha, who was fielded by the AAP after replacing Sisodia, who had represented the seat in the Assembly for three consecutive terms.
AAP’s Sahi Ram won the Tughlakabad seat by 14,711 votes. Ahlawat won from Sultanpur Majra by 17,126 votes, while AAP’s Jarnail Singh secured victory from Tilak Nagar by a margin of 11,656 votes.
BJP’s Rekha Gupta won the Shalimar Bagh seat, defeating her AAP rival by 29,595 votes, while the saffron party’s Manjinder Singh Sirsa emerged victorious from Rajouri Garden by 18,190 votes.
While the AAP dominated Delhi’s political landscape for the last 10 years, the BJP was out of power in the city since 1998.

As counting begins for the Delhi Assembly elections, early trends show top AAP leaders, including Chief Minister Atishi and Manish Sisodia trailing from their respective seats, while the party's National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal is leading. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has governed Delhi for over a decade, is facing significant challenges in the current election results. Arvind Kejriwal, contesting from the New Delhi Assembly constituency, was initially trailing behind the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Parvesh Verma but latest trends showed he is leading. Manish Sisodia, former education minister of Delhi, is behind in Jangpura, while Chief Minister Atishi is trailing the BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri in Kalkaji. Despite these setbacks, some AAP leaders are maintaining leads in their constituencies. Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj is leading in Greater Kailash, and Cabinet colleague Gopal Rai is ahead in Babarpur. Senior party leader Durgesh Pathak, contesting from Rajinder Nagar, is also leading. However, other prominent AAP figures are facing difficulties. Amanatullah Khan, a two-time MLA from Okhla, is trailing in his seat. Satyendar Jain, who is out on bail in a money laundering case, is behind in Shakur Basti. Avadh Ojha, an IAS exam coach who joined the AAP ahead of the elections, is trailing in Patparganj, the former seat of Sisodia. Somnath Bharti, contesting from Malviya Nagar, is also behind. The election, held on February 5 to elect members to the 70-seat Assembly, has been a battleground between the AAP's 'Delhi model' of governance and the BJP's aggressive campaign focussing on corruption allegations against AAP leaders.

Launching an attack on AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, Harish Khurana said the former Delhi CM, instead of resolving Delhi's problems, was "dilly-dallying" with the politics of allegations and accusations. "BJP candidate from Moti Nagar constituency Harish Khurana said, "The way we are getting the response from the people, not just in Moti Nagar but in entire Delhi, BJP is going to win with more than 50 seats. The people were facing issues but instead of answering their questions, Arvind Kejriwal and his gang were dilly-dallying with the politics of allegations and accusations. Their attempts have failed."

Congress candidate from Kalkaji assembly seat Alka Lamba launched a sharp attack on AAP and the BJP, asserting that both parties are headed for defeat in the constituency and affirmed confidence to win the seat. "I don't think the people of Kalkaji have liked BJP candidate Ramesh Bidhuri. There was anger amongst the people due to his language. With money and power, he also tried to influence counts at many of my polling booths," Lamba said. She claimed that Atishi, AAP's candidate from Kalkaji, faced strong public resentment due to her lack of work. "I have seen immense anti-incumbency against Atishi. Even after being in power, she did not work for the people. Instead, she sought votes in the name of Arvind Kejriwal in her constituency," she said. Targeting Kejriwal, Alka Lamba accused him of misleading voters. "AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal has a habit of telling lies. Iss baar vo bhaag nai, bhagaye jarahe. He is losing from New Delhi constituency," she asserted.

As per the early trends, Kejriwal is trailing from this seat, whereas BJP's Parvesh Verma is leading from the New Delhi Assembly constituency. The BJP is also shown leading in several seats, however, these are very early trends and we have to wait at least till noon to get a clear picture. Exit polls have projected a comeback for the BJP in Delhi after 27 years, with the party predicted to hit the majority mark of 36 comfortably and bag 10-15 more seats than that, ousting the incumbent Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP. The Congress, however, is projected to bag 0-3 seats at maximum. The election results can be tracked on the Election Commission of India (ECI's) official website. According to the Conduct of Election Rules, postal ballots will be counted first and the process of counting of votes recorded in electronic voting machines (EVMs) begin 30 minutes later. After that, counting of votes cast through postal ballots and EVMs will continue simultaneously. Since 2019, VVPAT (voter verifiable paper audit trail) slips from five randomly selected polling stations per assembly constituency are matched with the EVM count for greater transparency. Delhi, with 1.55 crore eligible voters, recorded a turnout of 60.54 per cent in the February 5 election.

A three-tier security arrangement with 10,000 police personnel, including two companies of paramilitary forces at each centre, has been put in place. The results will reveal if AAP's political dominance in Delhi remains intact or is dented enough by the BJP for the saffron party to return to power for the first time since 1998. The Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP has dominated Delhi's political map since 2015, routing both the BJP and the Congress in the assembly polls held that year by winning 67 of the 70 seats. It returned to power in 2020 with 62 seats. An AAP victory will re-establish Kejriwal's dominance in Delhi and enhance his political stature nationally.
