Union Minister Chirag Paswan on Tuesday met the family members of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who died allegedly by suicide at his Chandigarh residence on October 7. He assured them that their demands will be fulfilled and action will be taken without delay.
Earlier, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi also met Puran Kumar's family and offered his condolences.
Addressing reporters after meeting the family, Gandhi said there was systematic discrimination against Kumar to demoralise him and damage his career.
He said Puran Kumar’s death was not about the respect of one family but all Dalits, and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to act immediately in the case.
The Congress leader criticised CM Saini for failing to act on his assurances. He said the Haryana CM has not fulfilled his commitment of a free and fair inquiry.
Gandhi's visit came amid stepped up attacks by the opposition against the Haryana government over Kumar's alleged suicide.

The Chandigarh Police detained several Youth Congress workers as they attempted to march towards the residence of the Haryana Chief Minister to protest the government's inaction in the case. According to Deepak Lubana, Chandigarh Youth Congress president, the protesters were stopped en route and forcefully taken to the police station. The protesting Congress workers carried posters and banners demanding immediate arrest of the officers named in Puran Kumar's suicide note.
