Pahalgam attack: NIA team reaches Kashmir; Rajnath reviews security

Home Minister Amit Shah asserted that the country will not bend to terror and that those responsible for the killing of tourists at Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir will not be spared.

He met the families of the Pahalgam terror attack victims and assured them that the terrorists who carried out the attack will not be punished. After paying his last respects to those who died in the attack, Shah met their families in Srinagar.

“With a heavy heart, paid last respects to the deceased of the Pahalgam terror attack. Bharat will not bend to terror. The culprits of this dastardly terror attack will not be spared," Shah tweeted.

Shah also visited Baisaran meadows, the scene of gruesome killing of 26 tourists in Pahalgam area of Jammu and Kashmir a day earlier, officials said.

After attending a wreath laying ceremony for the victims of the terror attack at the Police Control Room here, Shah flew in a chopper to Baisaran meadows, around 110 kilometres from here, the officials said.

They said Shah was briefed by the security officials about the incident.

Terrorists struck at a prime tourist location in Pahalgam in south Kashmir on Tuesday, killing at least 26 people, mostly tourists, and injuring several others.

Shah arrived here within hours of the attack on Wednesday night and was briefed about the situation by Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat.

The Home Minister also chaired a security review meeting, which was also attended by the Lieutenant Governor.

Rajnath Singh cancels Ladakh visit

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has cancelled his two-day scheduled visit to Ladakh in view of the situation arising out of the terror attack in Pahalgam. Singh was to visit Ladakh on April 25 and 26.

The special unreserved train will run at 9:20 pm for those who want to cut short their trip to Jammu and Kashmir and return to their respective destinations, an official said. Reports suggested that several tourists at various places in Jammu wanted to return to their respected cities in the wake of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. “Considering the urgency, we have immediately arranged a special train for all classes of passengers to return to their home cities,” Himanshu Upadhyay, Chief Public Relation Officer, Northern Railway (NR), said. The train, after starting from Sri Vaishno Devi Katra at 9:20 pm, will halt at several other stations en route such as Udhampur, Jammu, Pathankot, Jalandhar, Ambala, Kurukshetra and Panipat before terminating at the New Delhi Railway Station at 9:30 am on Thursday.

Ruling National Conference members took out a protest march against the Pahalgam attack that left 26 people dead. NC MLAs, party leaders and workers, including Nasir Aslam Wani, advisor to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, assembled at the party office at Nawa-i-Subah here and marched to the Lal Chowk City centre. The chief minister's two sons -- Zahir and Zamir -- also participated in the protest march.

Defence Minister reviews security situation

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met the Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan and the three military chiefs, as well as National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, to discuss the fallout of Tuesday's terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam and review security situation in the union territory. Earlier, today the Defence Minister was briefed on the security situation, in Pahalgam and across J&K, by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi and his Navy counterpart, Admiral Dinesh Tripathi. The Minister will later take part in a Cabinet Committee on Security meeting to be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The CCS is the highest decision-making body on national security.

PM cancels Kanpur visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has cancelled his April 24 Kanpur visit in the wake of Kashmir terror attack. A statement said he was scheduled to visit Kanpur on 24th April to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for development projects worth over ₹20,000 crore. “However, in light of the recent terror attack that claimed a number of lives, including that of Shubham- a courageous young son of Kanpur, and keeping in mind the somber mood and sentiments of the people, the event has been cancelled,” official sources said. They said as a mark of respect, it was considered appropriate to defer any celebratory or formal public engagement in Kanpur during this period of grief.

A two-minute silence was observed on Wednesday at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to pay tribute to the victims of the terror attack at Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting chaired by Dhami and attended by senior officials, including Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey, Secretary to CM Shailesh Baghauli and Secretary (housing and energy) R Meenakshi Sundaram was held at the the chief minister's official residence. Conveying his deep condolences to the families that lost their loved ones in the attack, Dhami said, "My deep condolences to the bereaved families on behalf of the people of Uttarakhand. This cowardly attack is not only an attack on innocent people but also on the culture, peace and values of humanity of our country." Pakistan said it condoles the death of tourists in the terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir that killed 26 people. “We are concerned at the loss of tourists' lives in an attack in Anantnag district. We extend our condolences to the near ones of the deceased and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” Foreign Office spokesperson said responding to media queries about the attack.

Security stepped up outside Pakistan embassy in Delhi

The security arrangements have been strengthened outside the Pakistan Embassy in the national capital on Wednesday in the wake of deadly attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam area. According to a senior Delhi Police officer, multiple teams of Delhi Police, along with Rapid Action Force and a contingent of Central Resrve Police Force personnel have been deployed outside the embassy to avert any kind of untoward situation.
