Punjab farmers’ protest: Joginder Ugrahan arrested; Manjit Dhaner ‘roughed up by police’
Despite heavy police presence and roadblocks, farmers in Punjab have begun their march towards Chandigarh in small groups, aiming for a week-long sit-in. Police have stopped their progress at checkpoints and sealed the city border, while also detaining several farmer leaders, including those from the BKU Rajewal faction.

BKU Dakaunda, the second-largest farmer union in Punjab, has alleged that police roughed up their president Manjit Singh Dhaner. When police tried to arrest Dhaner near Bhaini Dharera village, Raikot, a number of farmers gathered and did not let them take away Dhaner. The farmer leader managed to slip away as police and farmers came to a near confrontation, said Angrej Singh,his associate.

Farmers coming in tractor trolleys from Ferozepur stopped near Samrala. At many places, Punjab Police have parked tippers on the highways to block the farmers from heading towards Chandigarh. Farmer leaders say that they are now trying to reach Chandigarh through rural link roads, by avoiding highways.

Top leaders who will lead today’s protest are Sukhdev Singh Kokrikalan, General Secretary BKU Ugrahan; Shingara Singh, District President, BKU Ugrahan, Bathinda; Gurnam Singh (State Senior Vice President, Punjab Kissan Union) will depart from Village Samao and Village Bhikhi in Mansa. Bhupinder Singh, State Committee Member, Kirti Kisan Union (Dhudike Group) will lead the protest from village Ubhawal, Sangrur.
Farmers gathering in small numbers

Farmer unions, too, have started gathering in small numbers at various places in the state. Reports received by The Tribune shows that farmers are beginning to gather in Morinda, farmers from Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, and Hoshiarpur are expected to assemble at gurdwara Tibbi Sahib, Ropar, while farmers from Ludhiana and Jagraon will gather at Village Andlu, near Raikot to further depart for Chandigarh. Farmers from Sangrur are expected to assemble at Mehmadpur in Patiala.
Heavy police force deployed

In Fatehgarh Sahib, heavy police force has been deployed in Sirhind and Khumano. In Patiala, the toll plazas at Dhareri Jattan and Ajizpur have been sealed. In Ropar, Sangrur and Barnala districts, too, there is heavy deployment of police along the highway leading to Chandigarh.

In Samrala, farmers were stopped by police from moving to Chandigarh, they said. The Chandigarh administration has denied permission to farmers to hold their sit-in at Sector 34 in the city.

In Moga, Krantikari Kisan Union district president Jatinder Singh said they were stopped at Ajitwal in Moga district by the Punjab Police when they were going to Chandigarh. Singh claimed some of them were "detained".
30 farmer bodies gather

The SKM, a conglomerate of more than 30 farmer bodies, has given a call for a week-long sit-in in Chandigarh starting on March 5. The outfit said the farmers who left for Chandigarh in tractor-trolleys and other vehicles on Wednesday morning were being stopped by the Punjab Police.
