War on drugs cannot succeed with mere slogans: Warring
Taking a dig at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) flagship programme “Yudh Nashian Virudh”, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Saturday said, “The war on drugs can neither finish overnight and nor can it succeed with mere slogans.”
He called for comprehensive measures to curb the problem that had been consuming lives of so many people across the state.
Warring also emphasised on creating awareness about the Constitution and the need to protect it. Addressing the “Jai Samvidhan rally”, as part of Congress party’s nationwide campaign to save the Constitution here today, Warring said, the BJP government at the Centre and the Aam Aadmi Party government in the state were undermining the Constitution.
He pointed out how various government agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the CBI and the Income Tax were being misused to target the Opposition leaders. He quoted the example of the National Herald case in which the ED had charge-sheeted Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. He said, there were hundreds of such cases wherein the ED and other agencies had been arm-twisting political opponents of the ruling dispensation.
Similarly, he said, the AAP government in Punjab was doing the same thing with its political opponents and trying to muzzle their voice. He referred to the FIR against the Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly Partap Singh Bajwa, just because he had said that grenade attacks were taking place so frequently in the state.
He also accused Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann of using brutal force against agitating farmers at the behest of the Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The Punjab Congress Committee (PCC) president referred to the alarmingly growing debt of the state, which had already touched Rs 4.25 lakh crore. He warned that at this rate, by the time AAP relinquishes office, the debt might touch Rs 6 lakh crore. He said, it would be difficult to even run day to day affairs.
He suggested rationalising subsidies and freebies.
He said, “If people have jobs and a regular income, they will not have to depend on freebies.” Warring exhorted upon Congress workers and leaders to keep a watch on voter lists. He said, the ruling parties had been found manipulating voter lists by getting the potential opponents’ names deleted and supporters included. He referred to Maharashtra where 45 lakh new voters were added within a span of six months.
Among those present at the rally include Pawan Adia, Angad Singh, Tarlochan Singh Soondh, Gur Iqbal Kaur, Satvir Singh Palli Jhikki, DCC president Ajay Mangupur and others.
