Kurukshetra Development Board to ensure fresh water in Sannihit Sarovar
Nearly three years after a proposal was discussed to install a filtration and treatment plant at Sannihit Sarovar, the Kurukshetra Development Board has again taken up the project, to ensure the availability of fresh water in the holy pond.
Sannihit Sarovar is one of the major tirthas in Kurukshetra and people from different parts of the country reach here on the occasion of Amavasya, the solar eclipse, and to offer prayers to their ancestors and offer Pind Daan. The Tirtha is also associated with Sage Dadhichi. The Vaman Dwadashi fair is also organised at Sannihit Sarovar. Even the Deepautsav on the occasion of International Gita Mahotsav is held here.
However, the stagnant water in the holy pond has been a matter of concern for the board and there has been a long pending demand for proper maintenance of the Sarovar.
To keep the water of the Sannihit Sarovar clean and reduce bacterial load, the KDB had planned to get a water treatment and filtration plant for the Sarovar. In September 2022, a team of subject experts visited the site, however, the project was later put on the back burner.
The matter was discussed in the recently held meeting of the Board of Management of Kurukshetra Development Board in the presence of Haryana Governor and board’s chairman Bandaru Dattatreya and Chief Minister Haryana and board’s vice-chairman Nayab Singh Saini. At the meeting, directions were issued to the board officials to prepare a fresh proposal for the filtration plant for Sannihit Sarovar.
Honorary secretary of the KDB Upender Singhal said, “The Chief Minister has issued direction to prepare a proposal for Sannihit Sarovar and use latest technology. Letters have been sent to the Irrigation Department and the consultant, and soon a meeting will be held to discuss the project for identifying the product to be used. At present, as per the need, the stagnant water is drained out and fresh water is filled in the pond. Fountains will also be installed at Sannihit Sarovar for which the level of water is being reduced. It will help in oxidation in the Sarovar and also increase the beauty.”
Madan Mohan Chhabra, chairman of 48-kos Tirtha Monitoring Committee, in whose tenure as the KDB honorary secretary, the filtration project was proposed, said, “All efforts are being made to ensure clean water in the pond for which there is a plan to introduce filtration plant. However, there is also a proposal to lay a separate pipeline and provide fresh water at Sannihit Sarovar on the lines of Brahma Sarovar where a fresh water supply and flow of water is ensured with the help of motors. Both proposals will be discussed and the suitable project for the Sannihit Sarovar will be introduced.”
Chief executive officer of the KDB Pankaj Setia said, “A large number of people reach Sannihit Sarovar to offer prayers to their ancestors, and the practice of offering Pind Daan in the Sarovar has been a matter of concern. To maintain the sanctity and for purification of the water, the board has been working on the project to ensure fresh water in the holy pond.”
