1 dies as drug peddlers’ vehicle hits motorcycle
Amritsar, August 2
An RMP (Registered Medical Practitioner) doctor died after his bike was hit by the vehicle of two drug peddlers who were being chased by a police party near Tapiala.
The incident occurred on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. The duo identified as Manpreet Singh and Judge Singh of Ferozepur were escaping after breaking a police naka on the Chogwan-Ajnala road here. Earlier, they had shot at a police party and tried to run over a cop while breaking the checkpoint. Head constable Gurbhej Singh was injured in the incident.
One of their accomplices identified as Paramjit Singh of the Panj Garayia area in Ferozepur was arrested by the police.
The deceased doctor was identified as Jota Singh of Lodhi Gujjar village in Lopoke. The police registered two separate FIRs on Thursday in this connection and raids are on to nab Manpreet and Judge Singh.
ASI Ranjit Singh said Manpreet, Judge and Paramjit Singh were wanted in connection with an FIR registered under the NDPS Act at the Chheharta police station.
The police got a tip-off that the suspects were present in the Lopoke area following which a naka was laid on the Chogwan-Ajnala road and grey coloured Innova was signalled to stop at the checkpost. He said one of the occupants Paramjit Singh came out of the vehicle, but Manpreet Singh, who was sitting on the behind seat, shot at the police team. Judge was driving the vehicle, Paramjit told the police.
Finding an opportunity, Judge accelerated Innova, broke the naka and fled from the spot. Head constable Gurbhej Singh managed to save himself by swiftly moving away from speeding Innova, but still he sustained injuries in the incident.
The police recovered a Pakistan-made Glock pistol and three live 9mm cartridges from the possession of Paramjit Singh. During the police chase, Innova hit a bike that was being driven by RMP doctor Jota Singh in the Tapiala area. The doctor died on the spot. On the complaint of Lovejit Singh, a relative of the deceased, the police registered a separate FIR against Judge Singh and Manpreet on the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The police said a manhunt was launched to nab two drug peddlers who had several cases of the NDPS Act registered against them in Ferozepur district. — TNS
