Amritsar, June 18

The Medical Education and Research Department has ended the services of 15 of the total 21 re-employed senior faculty members at Government Medical College here.

These faculty members were reemployed after their regular retirement from service on attaining the age of 62 years. The officials of the department said the remaining six faculty members have been retained in line with the minimum faculty criteria of the National Medical Commission.

While the government has termed the move as an effort to provide more opportunities to the younger faculty members and save the government exchequer’s money, a senior faculty member said: “Retired teachers were reemployed as per norms and were paid around Rs 67,000 to Rs 68,000 per month.”

He said it was falsely being claimed that the reemployed faculty members were being paid up to Rs 3 lakh per month. The relieved faculty members said it was also being falsely claimed that reemployed faculty members were not performing Covid duties. They said faculty members, as per rules, are appointed against a vacant post and in case the said post is filled, the services of the reemployed faculty member automatically end.

“There is also no truth in reemployed faculty members blocking promotion channels of junior faculty members,” said another faculty member.
