Amritsar, July 6
The counter intelligence wing of Amritsar nabbed a truck driver and recovered 20 kg opium from his possession here today. The accused has been identified as Ajmer Singh of Bachiwind village near Attari.
Inspector Inderbir Singh of the counter intelligence wing said their team had received a tip-off that opium was being smuggled from Imphal, capital city of Manipur, to Amritsar.
The CI wing set a naka at Baba Bakala Morh on the GT road and intercepted a truck last evening. During search of truck, the CI personnel recovered 20 kg opium. The accused was produced in the local court, which sent him to five-day police remand for further investigation.
During preliminary investigation, Ajmer Singh claimed that he smuggled opium for the first time and his main occupation is that of a truck driver.
