23,799 cases settled at National Lok Adalat
In a remarkable achievement, a total of 23,799 cases were amicably resolved during the National Lok Adalat held at the district courts and the subdivisional courts at Ajnala and Baba Bakala.
District and Sessions Judge Amarinder Singh Grewal said the purpose of the event was to provide an alternative dispute resolution platform for various categories of cases. He said a total of 32 benches were set up across the three locations, with 25 benches at the Amritsar District Courts, three benches at the Ajnala subdivisional court, and two benches at the Baba Bakala Sahib subdivisional court. Additionally, benches were set up by the counselling cell of the Police Department to address matrimonial and family disputes.
During the National Lok Adalat, of the 30,270 cases taken up, 23,799 were settled and disposed of. The cases settled included criminal compoundable cases, bank recovery cases, cheque bounce cases, matrimonial disputes, and more.
Amrinder Singh Grewal, who is also the chairman of the District Legal Services Authority, highlighted the importance of Lok Adalats in providing a platform for amicable settlements without any expense on the part of litigants. He also emphasized that Lok Adalats help reduce the burden of pending cases in courts and provide a speedy and cost-effective method of dispute resolution.
“It is free of cost and expeditious method to bring litigating parties to a settlement of their disputes and saving them from long litigation under adversarial system of adjudication, which is generally perceived to be time consuming, complex and costly,” he added.
