Three employees of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Bank bungled over Rs 2.37 crore from the branch located in Shashtri Market here. The incident came to light when branch manager conducted a surprise checking of cash and found the money missing.
The branch manager reported it to the higher bank authorities at zonal office in Kathua and cluster head office in Mohali. Following a complaint by Iftikhar Abdula Sofi, cluster head, J&K Bank, Mohali, the Kotwali police booked three bank employees, including Sunil Khajuria, cash manager, and Rakesh Kumar Bakshi and Amit Gupta, both assistant cashier of the bank.
“No arrest has been made till now,” the police said while adding that a case under Sections 420 (Cheating), 406 (Criminal breach of trust) and 34 (Common intention) of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the three suspects.
Sofi in his statement to the police stated that on February 17, Subhash Chander, branch head manger, did surprise checking of cash in the strong room. During counting, he found Rs 2.04 crore missing from cash. He immediately informed about the missing cash at zonal office in Kathua and to cluster head in Mohali in writing.
Sofi said he along with his team reached the bank and counted the cash again, but found Rs 2.37 crore missing instead of Rs 2.04 crore. During investigation, it was found that Rakesh Kumar Bakshi and Amit Gupta gave in writing that they had bungled the amount. They returned some amount on different dates.
However, the bank authorities decided to lodge a complaint. The police booked Sunil Khajuria, Bakshi and Gupta in the case. Further investigation was in progress.
