3 phones found abandoned in jail

Amritsar: A day after jail staff seized five mobile phones from the high-security Amritsar Central Jail and booked four inmates in the case, three more mobile phones were found abandoned in the complex. Following a complaint lodged by jail officials, a case under Sections 42 and 52-A of the Prisons Act was registered against unknown persons. According to information, during checking in the bathroom of barrack number 7, an unclaimed mobile was found while two other mobiles were seized from different places. On Wednesday, Central Jail staff recovered four mobile phones from as many inmates while one was found abandoned during a surprise checking in room number 1 of barrack number 3. TNS

City-katra gareeb rath sought

Amritsar: Rajya Sabha MP Shwait Malik has demanded Gareeb Rath train between Amritsar and Katra, base camp of cave shrine of Vaishno Devi in Parliament. In a release issued from his local office here on Friday he said both the destinations were famous holy cities. Malik said while lakhs of devotees pay obeisance at the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, Shri Valmiki temple at Ramtirath and Durgiana Tirath in Amritsar. Similarly, lakhs of devotees visit Vaishno Devi shrine daily. TNS

Local resident writes to CM

Amritsar: A resident of C-block of Ranjit Avenue has written to the Chief Minister against the Amritsar Improvement Trust. The complainant, Ramandeep Kaur, said, “The AIT has opened a passage from the boundary wall for ingress in the Ranjit Avenue from Faizpura area. As per the laws, the trust should construct a wall there to check entry of miscreants into the locality. But the AIT did not make any efforts to do so.” The complainant alleged that flats in the locality were forcibly occupied and being used by drug addicts. TNS

Markets to stay closed for Holi

Amritsar: Majith Mandi, dry fruit hub, Shastri market and Katra Ahulwalia and wholesale textile hub of the city will remain closed on account of Holi festival for three days from March 8. TNS
