65-year-old man hurt in firing succumbs to injuries

A resident of Sheron village identified as Jaspal Singh (65), who was seriously injured in a firing incident at his native village on December 10, succumbed to injuries during treatment at a local private hospital here today. The police have initiated action in this regard and questioned family of the deceased and activists of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, Punjab.

In an FIR registered by the Sarhali police regarding the firing incident, deceased Jaspal Singh and his other relatives identified as Baljinder Singh, his son Mehal Singh and Heera Singh, all residents of Sheron village, and Sartaj Singh Sanni, a resident of Rasulpur village, were booked on basis of the statement of one Harjit Singh, a resident of Sheron village. In the FIR it was mentioned that Jaspal Singh was injured in the firing by Sartaj Singh Sanni, a resident of Rasulpur village.

The police did not record statement of Jaspal Singh before his death or his family member till date. Jaspal Singh’s family raised questions over the police proceedings and declared that they would not let doctors conduct autopsy of the body of the deceased till action was taken against real culprits.

The Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC), Punjab, also condemned the police for failing to take action against accused and organised a protest at the hospital here today.

Satnam Singh Manochahal and Harjnder Singh Shakri, president and general secretary of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, respectively, said the next course of action would be chalked out on Saturday at a meeting in case the police did not take action against accused involved in the firing incident.

They said in a video of the incident an influential person was seen heading armed men involved in the firing incident. The Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee threatened not to cremate the body of the deceased till his family got justice.
