Amritsar, April 12
In yet another seizure, as many as nine mobile phones were recovered from the Amritsar Central Jail here on Monday. The police have booked three prisoners following a complaint by the jail authorities.
This is third major recovery in the last one week. Prohibited material is being sneaking into the high-security Central Jail and continuous seizures are on.
On Sunday, the jail staff had confiscated 10 mobile phones while seven cell phones were recovered four days ago.
On the complaint of Bahadur Singh, Assistant Superintendent, Jail, the police booked three prisoners. They were identified as Malkiat Singh, alias Laddu of Patti, Tarn Taran; Mohitpal Singh of Maqboolpura; and Harpreet Singh of the Prem Nagar area here. The Islamabad police have registered a case under Sections 42 and 52-A of the Prisons Act against them for violation of jail norms.
According to Bahadur Singh, during checking of room number 2 of barrack number 6, the jail staff recovered two smart phones from Malkiat Singh and Mohitpal Singh, while a keypad phone was confiscated from Harpreet Singh. Similarly, during checking of a garbage bin, the staff recovered three keypad phones and one phone was found near the exhaust fan of the room. Similarly, two more phones were confiscated from the garbage. The staff also recovered a mobile charger from the litter.
Police authorities said the accused would be brought on production warrant and would be arrested. They would be interrogated to ascertain how they managed to secure a mobile phone inside the jail premises.
