On behalf of Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, a three-member team from the Amritsar Congress Committee, led by Sourabh Madaan Mithu, delivered a brand-new bicycle to six-year-old Amritpal Singh in the flood-affected village of Ghonewal on Wednesday.
The Congress team arranged a video call between Amritpal and Rahul Gandhi, during which the young boy expressed his gratitude with a bright smile. With folded hands, Amritpal’s entire family also thanked Rahul Gandhi and was deeply touched by the gesture.
Gandhi had promised to replace Amritpal’s old and rusted bicycle after four feet of floodwater entered their home during the recent floods.
During his visit to the flood-ravaged villages in Amritsar’s Ajnala, along with Gurdaspur, on September 15, Gandhi visited the house of Ravidas Singh in Ghonewal village, Ramdass area of Ajnala. He found Amritpal weeping as he stood on a bed inside the house.
Gandhi embraced the boy to comfort him, called him brave and promised to gift him a new bicycle to lift his spirits.
This incident reminded locals of a similar event during the Congress political roadshow in Bihar’s Darbhanga on August 27, when Dhaba owner Shubham lost his bike. Rahul Gandhi later compensated him by gifting a brand-new bike.
