Amritsar, February 27
Actor-turned-activist Sonia Mann, who hails from Amritsar, joined the student organisations protesting at GNDU, demanding justice for Shubhkaran Singh, who died during a police crackdown on the border of Punjab and Haryana.
The protest march started from Gurdwara Sahib, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) and ended at the university’s main gate. A number of students participated in protest, including several student leaders from National Student Union of India and Student Organisation of India. They tied black armbands and were led by Jujhar Singh, convener, student organisation Sath. The students carried placards with Shubhkaran’s photographs and raised demands to punish those responsible for his death.
Sonia Mann, said there was a need for all people belonging to the state and the Punjab Government to stand behind the farmers. “Despite the peaceful protest the Haryana Police instigated the farmers and used pellets, water cannons and tear gas shells, due to which Shubhkaran lost his life. The farmers are not asking for much!” she added. She repeated the farmer’s demands of registering an FIR against the police personnel. Jujhar Singh said the students present at the protest were concerned about the oppression of the farmers at the hands of the government. Among those present at the students march, were Amritpal Singh’s father Tarsem Singh.
