After spending anxious nights amid drone attacks by Pakistan, the situation in the city remained tense until the ceasefire was announced by both the countries following US intervention. But before that, an all hands on the deck approach was adopted by the district administration that issued an advisory to remain indoors and not gather in large numbers outside. The administration had also set up citizens volunteer groups to keep vigil and be ready for any untoward situation.

The district administration sought the cooperation of citizens for various services in civil defence, as 541 youth and other residents came forward to contribute on the very first day of registration under Volunteer Civil Defence Committee. Additional Deputy Commissioner (Urban Development) Major Amit Sarin said that with the help of Red Cross, a meeting was held with various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) of the city. Representatives of these 42 organisations participated in the meeting with great enthusiasm and agreed to contribute in every way for the service of the country.

While the ceasefire announcement came as relief for citizens in this border belt, Sarin said that the main need on the occasion was the cooperation of residents in various fields. He said that non-governmental organisations (NGOs) filled the forms on the spot for their 476 volunteers to get enrolled in civil defence. Apart from this, the NCC cadets came forward to help in civil defence with 65 volunteers getting enrolled.

“This border region has been standing as a shield for the crisis facing the country at different times and the proof has been seen today. The work of civil defence is mainly to work for the safety of citizens, so we will take their services in the future to help the needy in the district,” Sarin said.
