Amritsar, July 24
Taking a spiritual approach towards replenishing the ever-decreasing number of trees in the city, local students and citizens planted the sacred Reetha tree at Bhai Veer Singh Niwas Asthana with the support of environmentalist PS Bhatti. Apart from this, 75 different types of saplings were also planted here.
Amaneet Singh, DFO, Amritsar, while welcoming the school principals, NGO officials and children, thanked Bhatti for the native tree species planted in this garden of spirituality and virtue.
“The Reetha plant, also known as Indian Soapberry in English, was prepared with the seeds sourced from plant at Reetha Sahib Gurdwara in Champawat district, Uttarakhand and has special significance due to its association with Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The plant was planted near the hut of Bhai Veer Singh, who inspired the architectural style of Gurdwara Hemkunt Sahib,” said Gunbir Singh on behalf of Bhai Veer Singh Asthana management.
Stating that there has been a drastic decline in the state’s greenery over the past few years, Singh termed it as a matter of serious concern and said it had adversely affected the environment. He added that to improve the situation, there is a need to adopt a spiritual approach to tree planting campaigns. He appealed to the residents of the city to plant more trees during the saawan season so that they can help compensate for the lost greenery of the area and the loss of nature caused by it.
