As per the directions of the Deputy Commissioner, Amritsar, District Education Office has declared a holiday on August 26 (Tuesday) in all government and private schools falling under the Ajnala-2 and Rayya-1 blocks. The announcement comes after day-long heavy rains lashed the district, with the weather department issuing a warning for more downpours on Tuesday.

In a letter issued by DEO Kanwaljeet Singh, as a precautionary measure, the schools in these catchment areas have been closed for a day. “Only exemptions have been made for schools or institutions where exams have been scheduled for the day. The orders have been taken keeping in mind the safety of students as heavy and consistent rains have increased waterlogging and flooding situations,” said DEO Kanwaljeet Singh.

The DEO has also issued a cautionary letter to all government school heads to ensure student safety in school buildings. “Any school that has a classroom or any unsafe structure should isolate and lock the room immediately. Students should not be made to sit or use any classroom that has leakages or seepage issues. In addition, school heads will ensure that waterlogging is not witnessed on the school campus. Any violation or non-compliance with these instructions will invite strict action,” the letter stated.
