Ajnala residents launch indefinite protest against police inaction
Residents of Ajnala town have launched an indefinite protest outside the local police station, accusing the police administration of inaction in several criminal cases. The protesters claim that incidents of crime, particularly those involving criminal elements and drug addicts, have been on the rise, while the local police have failed to take effective action.
The ongoing protest has been triggered by an alleged assault on Jagga Singh Ajnala, president of the Shaheed Naujwan Sabha, by local gangsters. Jagga sustained serious injuries in the attack and was initially admitted to Ajnala Civil Hospital. However, due to the severity of his injuries, he was later referred to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital.
The residents allege that despite the assailants being identified by local people, the police have not recorded Jagga Singh’s statement even after 24 hours of the incident. Dr Satnam Singh Ajnala of the Jamhoori Kisan Sabha said, “The police have not registered an FIR so far. It seems that someone in the police or political circles is trying to protect those who had attacked Jagga.”
Jagga was reportedly attacked around 5 pm on May 15 while returning home after purchasing feed for his animals. Dr Ajnala said, “People are not even safe while going about their daily chores. The public is fed up with the deteriorating law and order situation in Ajnala.”
The protest, which began yesterday, continued into its second day. The protesters allege that the local SHO, despite promising to arrest the culprits, has failed to take any action. They stated that the protest will continue until a case is registered against the culprits under the relevant sections of the BNS.
