A day after Government Medical College (GMC) Principal Dr Rajiv Devgan and Guru Nanak Dev Hospital (GNDH) Medical Superintendent Dr Kanwardeep Singh tendered their resignations, Vice-Principal Dr Jagdev Singh Kullar too resigned from the post.

In his letter, Dr Kullar has cited personal reasons for his resignation from the post. Dr Kullar said, “I have served as Vice-Principal for two years and it is time that someone else gets a chance to run the institution.” He said as he has to look after his elderly parents, he felt difficult to continue. He added that he would continue to serve the college and the patients in his capacity as a professor.

Like Dr Kullar, Dr Devgan and Dr Kanwardeep Singh too had expressed their wish to continue serving their parent departments. The three senior-most officials of the college had tendered their resignations following the alleged rude behaviour of Punjab Health Minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra with Dr Raj Bahadur of Baba Farid University of Health and Medical Sciences.

Dr Raj Bahadur too had resigned from his position following the incident in which he was made to lie on an untidy mattress in front of cameras. The resignations by the three officials of the GMC are being seen as an expression of solidarity with Dr Bahadur.

The move has also come as a surprise as the top three positions at the GMC are much sought after by the faculty members. Insiders stated that with the general faculty mood also against the government on the issue, it would not be easy to find replacement for the three posts.

Cites personal reasons

I have served as Vice-Principal for two years and it is time that someone else gets the chance to run the institution. As I have to look after my elderly parents, I felt difficult to continue. — Dr Jagdev Singh Kullar
