Amritsar, February 11

In a joint operation today, the municipal corporation (MC) and the traffic police removed encroachments on both sides of the road heading from Hall Gate to Kairon Market and confiscated goods during the drive.

Vendors organise a Sunday Market in which they display goods on folding beds and mats spread on footpaths and the road. A large number of devotees visit the Golden Temple on weekends.

Due to illegal vends and Sunday Market encroachments, Hall Bazaar witnesses traffic congestion. As vendors encroach footpaths commuters are forced to walk on the road. Shopkeepers in the market alleged that vendors litter on road and footpaths during the Sunday Bazaar. Earlier, shopkeepers of Hall Bazaar had complained about the illegal Sunday Market to the MC and the traffic police.

MC Estate Officer Dharmindejit Singh said the joint operation with the traffic police would continue to remove encroachments in markets. “Roads and footpaths are for commuters and pedestrians. No one is allowed to encroach roads for selling goods. Today, we have seized several beds and goods sold on footpaths of Hall Bazaar. We have warned vendors several times not to encroach footpaths as a large number of devotees visit Golden Temple on every Sunday.”

He further said, “The illegal Sunday Bazaar disrupts the movement of traffic. Traders have also been warned not to display goods outside their shops. We will take strict action against violators.”

Several illegal bazaars are organised on city roads. A Sunday Bazaar organised outside the residence of the Police Commissioner on Mall Road also creates heavy traffic jam on the stretch.
