The recently completed Amritsar-Fatehgarh Churian Road is already showing signs of deterioration, with the surface peeling off at multiple locations. This has sparked anger among commuters, who accuse the authorities of using substandard materials and poor craftsmanship during construction.

The road, which took five years to complete, was a long-awaited project. During this period, several fatal accidents occurred on the stretch, leading to protests by residents of nearby villages, who urged the government to speed up the construction.

However, just months after its completion, the road has started to erode. Several areas have developed potholes, raising concerns about the quality of the work. Locals and daily commuters are now calling for immediate action to repair the road before the situation worsens.

Sandeep Singh, a resident of Jhangi village, said, “The road started breaking even before it was finished. Now, the surface is missing, and potholes have appeared. Though the road has been widened, there are no proper mud ramps along the edges to keep the surface intact. It will likely collapse during the next rainy season. This is clearly due to poor workmanship or the use of substandard material. The government should conduct an inquiry.”

Naveen Kumar, another resident of Fatehgarh Churian, added, “The government had promised that the recarpeting work would be completed in nine months, but it took five years. Many lives were lost due to accidents on this stretch. Now, the road is already falling apart, and the situation will likely get worse.”

The Fatehgarh Churian Road is a vital link between Amritsar and Dera Baba Nanak, a town near the India-Pakistan border. This 24-km stretch connects Amritsar and Gurdaspur districts, making its rapid deterioration a serious concern for the thousands of commuters who rely on it daily.
