Amritsar MC sterilises over 4,600 stray dogs in 6 months

The Commissioner of Municipal Corporation claimed that over 4,600 dogs have been sterilised during the last six months and 50 dogs are being sterilised daily. Municipal corporation hired Animal Welfare Charitable Trust, an NGO, in August 2023. As per the contract conditions, the NGO will sterilise 20 thousand canines. The MC has established an Animal Birth Control Centre at Naraingarh in Chheharta area and a sterilisation centre at Fatehgarh Shukarchak village on the outskirts of the city. The dog sterilisation operations are being carried out in both the centres.

Municipal Corporation Commissioner Harpreet Singh said that the corporation has planned to sterilise 20 thousand dogs. Out of 20,000 canines, around 4,600 dogs have been sterilised. MC Commissioner added that this work will be expedited in the coming days. He said that even before the commencement of this drive targeting to sterilize 20 thousand dogs, 9,600 dogs had already been sterilised by the MC. Commissioner Harpreet Singh said that as per the Animal Birth Control (ABC) rules, a dog that has been sterilised cannot be captured again and after sterilising, it should be left in the same territory from where it was caught.

On the directions of the MC Commissioner, a dog sterilisation and vaccination camp was organised by the Animal Welfare Charitable Trust in Civil Veterinary Hospital, Hathi Gate yesterday. MLA Dr Ajay Gupta visited the camp. Appreciating the efforts undertaken by the MC, Dr Gupta said the problem of stray dogs is very serious in the city. At present, the only option available with the government is to sterilise stray dogs. With this, the increasing population of stray dogs can be controlled.
