An unidentified person created a fake WhatsApp account of former IG and MLA Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh and allegedly extorted money from a local resident.
The incident came to light when the victim approached the MLA and Anshuman Khanna from the MLA’s office lodged a complaint with the police. The civil lines police have registered a case in this connection and launched further probe.
Khanna said the accused had created a fake WhatsApp account by putting the MLA’s photo as the profile picture in an illegal manner. The imposter extorted Rs 20,000 from one Simarpreet Arora. He said on investigating the incident, the account was found to be run by a person named Suresh Pansari.
He said this was an attempt to defame the dignity of the MLA and to mislead public at large.
Civil Lines SHO Amolakdeep Singh said a case under Sections 420, 384 and 500 of the IPC and Section 66-D of the Information Technology Act was registered against the accused and further investigation was under progress.
