Tarn Taran, February 22

Anganwadi workers and helpers under the banner of Anganwadi Mulazam Union, staged a dharna in front of the main gate of the District Administrative Complex (DAC) on Thursday in protest against the state government’s notification regarding the shifting of kids in the age-group of 3-6 years to pre-primary classes in schools.

Anoop Kaur Bler, district president of the union, led the Anganwadi workers and helpers. Besides Baler, union general secretary Beant Kaur, Veer Kaur and Sarabjit Kaur were among those who addressed the gathering. The union leaders warned the government against shifting kids from anganwadi centres to primary schools. The union leaders said that with the implementation of the notification, 54,000 workers and helpers would go jobless which the union was determined not to allow.

The leaders also demanded an increase in their monthly salary and withdrawal of the said notification. The protesting workers also burnt photocopies of the notification and presented a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.
