Gursewak Singh, who was held by the city police with 8 kg of heroin, used to supply the contraband in crowded areas to avoid catching the eye of the law. This came to light during his interrogation. He along with notorious smuggler Soni Singh alias Soni and three others was sent to three-day police remand. They were produced in court here on Tuesday.
Apart from Gursewak and Soni Singh, the police had arrested Vishaldeep Singh, alias Gola, Gurpreet Singh and Arshdeep Singh, all residents of Ajnala here.
A police official privy to the investigations said that the accused used to retrieve the drug consignments from the border belt in Khalra and Attari before dumping them in hotels. The racket has links with Pakistan-based drug peddlers and drones were being used to slip in large consignments of heroin into Indian territory.
The investigations carried out so far revealed that they had smuggled around 30 kg of heroin in past three months.
"The police was trying to identify those to whom the drug consignments were further delivered for supply in different parts of Punjab," said Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar. The police was hoping to recover more drug consignments in the coming days.
The police had initially arrested Soni Singh from the outskirts of the city along with 150 grams of heroin and drug money. He had six cases registered against him under the NDPS Act. He had come out of jail in June.
His disclosure led to the arrest of his associate Gursewak Singh who was arrested with 8.037 kg of heroin. The latter was handling the consignments to be delivered in the city.
