Hundred students of Plus Two Commerce stream from Shri Ram Ashram Public School, The Mall, Amritsar, paid an educational-cum-industrial visit to NRC Industries Ltd, Verka, on December 22-23, 2023. The industry, established in 1989, is one of the largest manufacturers in India of synthetic fabric belts and steel cord belts. Ashramites gained knowledge by visiting various units (manufacturing, packaging, sales) and departments where manufacturing was being done for textile reinforced conveyor belts, steel cord conveyor belts, PVC conveyor belts, industrial fabric, Chevron patterned belts and pipe conveyor belts. Visiting these units enhanced their practical knowledge about the principles of management, different stages of production, quality control methods, safety measures and functioning of different departments. The students were told that the machines and equipment were operated by microprocessor controls to ensure stringent quality checks and a reliable finished product. NRC has a 11D closed chamber Banbury mixer, which ensures perfect homogeneity and consolidation of mix. The industry exports a significant volume of belts to America, Europe and the Middle East.
Talk on empowering futures
Amritsar: Addressing students at Guru Nanak Dev University, Chetan Chada, a distinguished alumnus from Proctor and Gamble, Germany, delivered an insightful talk on career opportunities within the realm of data science. The session, attended by students from B.Tech (Electronics and Computer Engineering) in their fourth and sixth semesters, was graced by Dr Ravinder Kumar, Head of the Department of Electronics Technology, and Prof Ravinder Singh Sahwney, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, GNDU Amritsar. Chadha underscored the critical need to stay abreast of cutting-edge technologies, citing examples such as GitHub and cloud platforms like Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure and AWS. Additionally, he shed light on the pivotal role of machine learning and provided valuable insights into the current job landscape in the field of data science.
National Voters’ Day celebrated
DAV College, Amritsar, celebrated the 14th National Voters’ Day (NVD), with the theme,’Nothing Like Voting, I Vote for Sure’. As per directions from the Election Commission of India, the college conducted the NVD pledge in the seminar hall which was graced by the presence of Principal Dr Amardeep Gupta. Principal Dr Amardeep Gupta insisted that students enroll themselves as new voters and use their voting power to strengthen democracy. Prof Surinder Kumar, Head, Department of Political Science, spoke about how it shows the significance of individual voters’ right to choose their political representatives. The day was utilised to raise awareness among voters and for promoting informed participation in the electoral process through various activities Later, the ECI song, “Main Bharat Hoon, Hum Bharat Ke Matdata Hain” was also screened.
Opportunities in optics at IIT Madras
Guru Nanak Dev University’s Department of Electronics Technology hosted an insightful talk by Dr Deepa Venkitesh from IIT Madras. Dr Ravinder Kumar, Head, Department of Electronics Technology at GNDU, welcomed the guest who engaged the audience with her expertise on ‘AOC Testbed — Opportunities in Optics at IIT Madras’. During the session, she delved into cutting-edge research areas. Dr Venkitesh encouraged students to explore future employment opportunities in fields such as DSP, optical communication, deep learning and machine learning. The event, orchestrated by Dr Rajandeep Singh and Dr Kuldeep Singh, Assistant Professors of Electronics Technology, was graciously welcomed and concluded by Dr Rajandeep Singh.
