A cancer awareness camp was recently organised for the workers and employees involved in the construction of the water treatment plant under the Amritsar Bulk Water Supply Scheme at Valla. The initiative was a joint effort by the Municipal Corporation, Larsen & Toubro Company and the Amritsar Government Medical College.

Dr Jasmeet Singh and Dr Elin Abraham, experts from the medical college, delivered talks on various aspects of cancer, including its types, causes, early symptoms and available treatment options. Dr Jasmeet Singh shared concerning statistics, noting India records around 800,000 new cancer cases each year, with a similar number of cancer-related deaths annually. He said cancer occurs when cells in the body grow uncontrollably, potentially damaging surrounding organs.

Dr Jasmeet Singh went on to discuss major risk factors for cancer, such as alcohol consumption, tobacco use, poor diet, lack of exercise and pollution. He highlighted the importance of recognising early warning signs such as persistent wounds or ulcers, unexplained swelling, lumps, discharge from the chest, blood in stool, urine or vomit, changes in voice, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, weakness, anaemia and mouth sores or discoloration. He said anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention, urging individuals not to neglect potential

The event was attended by several notable individuals, including Ranjit Singh, Harpreet Singh, Dr Monika Sabharwal, Shiv Kumar Soni, Giriraj Singh Hada, Ashwani Kumar, Banpriya and Raman Sharma, who all showed support for the important cause. — TNS
