Amritsar: Doon International School, Amritsar, teamed up with Guinness World Record for an official attempt to host a grand chess tournament of conducting the maximum number of games in 24 hours on the occasion of World Chess Day. The lush green campus of DIS transformed into a huge chess board where more than 200 chess enthusiasts tested their wits in a day of strategic game play and healthy competition. The event marked the presence of eminent dignitaries including the director of the school, Meghna Sharma, vice-principal Vinisha Sharma along with tournament director Shubham Trikha. The event commenced with the lighting of the lamp ceremony followed by encouraging words by the vice-principal Vinisha Sharma.

Taekwondo championship

Sri Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary Public School, Chabhal road, has won laurels in Punjab State Taekwondo Championship. Its players from Class VII, Abhijot Singh clinched top position in the 37 kg category, Gurshaan Singh got second position in the 35 kg category and Anurag Sharma received bronze medal in the Under-37 kg category. In junior category, a student of Class IX, Rajanpreet Singh got silver medal in the Under-45 kg category.

Hockey match

Revel Dale Public School’s Under-14 hockey team stood first and the Under-19 hockey team notched up second position in the zonal-level tournament held at Mai Bhago School, Tarn Taran, on July 20. Players of both the teams demonstrated their unique athletic and sports potential. They showed stamina and endurance in the adverse weather conditions. They coordinated well and played as per the rule book. They played as per their plan and did not deviate from that.

Alumni felicitated

Holy Heart Presidency School felicitated its distinguished alumni, Guransh Sharma, school topper in the Commerce stream in 2017, and Naiyya Sachdeva from the same batch, for their remarkable achievement in clearing the chartered accountant exams. Both have now officially become chartered accountants, a testament to their dedication and hard work.

Faculty development programme

The Department of Laws, Guru Nanak Dev University, uploaded the results and schedule of LLM Joint Entrance Test which was conducted recently on https://www.gnduadmissions.org/campusadmissions/pdf/LL.M.%20PROVISIONAl%20RESULT%202024-25.pdf Dr Bimaldeep Singh, head of the department, said that physical counselling for LLM will be held for two days starting from July 25 at GNDU, Main Campus and Regional Campus, Jalandhar. The students will have to report at their respective campuses with their original documents and two sets of photostat documents along with the proof of having appeared in LLM joint entrance test 2024. The Law Department, Guru Nanak Dev University, is currently also conducting state-level counselling for admissions to BA LLB. As per the first counselling, 55 seats are filled (for Punjab quota: 32 General, 12 Scheduled Castes, 3 Backward Class, 1 PwD; and for Outside Punjab quota,: 3 General, 3 Scheduled Caste, 1 Backward Class). The second round of counselling is scheduled as per the details given on punjablawadmissions.gndu.ac.in

Image & video processing

Global Group of Institutes is hosting a five-day Faculty Development Programme on ‘OpenCV for Image & Video Processing Applications’. The five-day FDP from July 22 to 26 is being jointly organised by the Department of Computer Science & Engineering (RC) and NITTTR, Chandigarh. Coordinator Dr Meenakshi Sharma, HoD, CSE & IT and co-coordinator Prof Bhavneet Singh conducted the proceedings during which a large number of faculty members participated. Dr Meenakshi Sharma, HoD, CSE & IT of the Global Group of Institutes and coordinator of the FDP underlined the objective of the programme. She said that the FDP is aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of the participants in the field of image and video processing using OpenCV, an open source computer vision and machine learning software library. She further said that the programme will feature expert lectures, hands-on sessions and interactive discussions that will equip the participants with a thorough understanding of the latest trends and technologies in image and video processing. Dr Akashdeep Singh Chandi, vice-chairman of the Global Group of Institutes, said that the FDP is an excellent opportunity for faculty members to delve deep into the practical applications of OpenCV in image and video processing.

Shiksha Saptah

The Union Ministry of Education is celebrating ‘Shiksha Saptah’ from July 22-28, commemorating the fourth anniversary of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The week-long celebration provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on the transformative reforms introduced by NEP 2020 and reaffirm their commitment to advancing education across the nation. ‘Shiksha Saptah’ aims to foster a spirit of collaboration and innovation among learners, educators, policymakers and stakeholders in the education sector. It provides a platform to share best practices, discuss challenges and chart a path forward towards realising the vision outlined in the NEP 2020 at the grassroots level. On July 22, The Senior Study celebrated Teaching Learning Material (TLM) Day-1 as per guidelines issued by the CBSE acording to circular number Acad-55/2024 dated July 16, 2024. Teachers displayed their skills to the students. The box had some very interesting colourful blocks created for children, cards, masks, puppets, story boards, games, posters and puzzles.
