For several weeks, the Gurdaspur Municipal Committee (MC) piled heaps of wet garbage on the main roads of the city. This was due to the fact that the Municipal Committee could not arrange 3-4 acres of land where to dispose of the garbage. Doctors said the trash will give rise to several types of diseases. Deputy Commissioner Dalwinderjit Singh then took it on himself to find a site where the garbage could be deposited. The latest report of the Swachh Survekshan pegs the city at an abysmally low 806th place in the national rankings. In the state, the city slipped to 166 from 144 last year. With rains lashing the city and its surrounding areas, temporary garbage dumps set up by the MC are turning out to be perfect grounds for zoonotic diseases which are caused due to interaction of humans, animals and waste. All in all, the city has been left at the mercy of God.
