City students flay JNU attack

City-based students’ unions raised their voice against the brutal attack on students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Monday.

JNU students were attacked by a masked mob. The attack left many students and teachers, including president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union Aishe Ghosh, injured.

Students said educational institutions should not be targeted and students must be allowed to express their views on issues concerning the development of the nation.

Jatinder Singh, founder of the Guru Nanak Dev University Research scholar Association, said: “Educational institutions must be kept free from violence. Students must feel safe in their campus. Everyone should be allowed to express themselves freely.”

Gagandeep Kaur, leader of the Punjab Students’ Union (Lalkaar), said: “We are moving towards dictatorship. The students are being troubled. This is going to harm the nation in the long run.”

Members of the Democratic Teachers’ Union also criticised the attack on students of the esteemed university.

“We want an environment, where job opportunities are aplenty. Minds should be free of fear,” said Rishab, a student.

Student unions’ members said they were planning to launch a protest against the JNU violence.
