To express solidarity with the students of Jamia Millia Islamia, students held a protest against the police action on the GNDU campus here on Monday. Students of Guru Nanak Dev University and members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) staged a protest against violence being carried out in educational institutions such as Jamia Millia Islamia, Aligarh Muslim University during their protest over the Citizenship Amendment Act.
Students of various departments of the university, accompanied by student bodies, expressed their anger against the Delhi Police and policies of the government. The students, who were holding banners, raised slogans against the current regime. Their protest lasted more than an hour.
Gagan, a member of the Punjab Students’ Union (Lalkaar), said, “The government wants the youth to be diverted from real issues like poor economy and unemployment. The Bill clearly aims at dividing people on the basis of their religion. We held a protest for students as there is no role of the police in educational surroundings.”
Representatives of the NSUI, local students and residents together took out a candle march, which commenced from Novelty Chowk and culminated near Ram Bagh Gardens. Prateek Bhagat, a member of the district NSUI, said, “We are questioning the Modi government about the brutal police action on students. Why is the government silent? The Citizenship Amendment Act harms the essence of the nation. The students should not be treated the manner they were did at Jamia. Keep violence out of educational institutions.”
