Expressing their solidarity with victims of the JNU attack and protesting against CAA-NRC, student unions took out a march at Bhandari Bridge here on Wednesday. Members of the Punjab Students’ Unon (Lalkar), Students for Society, and Research Scholars’ Union, GNDU, participated in a protest in the city.
“It is our fundamental right to protest. It is not a crime if we do not support any decision of the government. Those who staged peaceful protests were attacked with a vindictive agenda. So, we stand in solidarity with them,” said Ravinder Kaur, a state committee member of the Punjab Students’ Union (Lalkar).
She said, “We condemned the violence against students and teachers of JNU. The government is polarising the country and students, who are resisting, are being dealt with force. Students are the future of the country and any attack on them is an attack on the future of the country.”
Jatinder Vir Singh, a member of the Research Scholars’ Union, GNDU, said students had boycott classes at the university in protest and would continue extending their support to other student unions across the country.
“These incidents are being perpetuated to create a fearful environment for students so that they cannot speak against the rising unemployment and economic crisis, which the government has failed to tackle. The violent crackdown on dissent is unlawful, unconstitutional and against the ethos of the country,” he added.
Shubkarmandeep from Students For Society said, “The entire sequence of events beginning from the introduction of the CAB has been a systematic agenda to create a situation of instability in the country. The objective is that no one can question the government over issues that actually matter. First, they targeted the intelligentsia and then the students who are the foundation of every society. We will continue to extend our support to the protests peacefully.”
