Comprehensive logistics plan to streamline traffic

Aiming to streamline urban traffic and improve the city’s supply chain network, Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney has directed officials to prepare a comprehensive logistics plan for Amritsar. Chairing a high-level meeting with senior officials, DC Sawhney emphasised that the plan should focus on facilitating smooth movement of goods, reducing traffic congestion and minimising negative environmental impacts.

She stated that consultations would be held with logistics experts, local traders, drivers, traffic officials, police, hotel associations, railway authorities and environmental planners to frame a practical and sustainable plan. Highlighting the role of logistics in boosting the city’s economy, she stressed the need to ensure that goods reach the supply chain with minimal delays.

DC Sawhney added that the new plan aims to tackle delivery inefficiencies caused by traffic congestion, pollution and unregulated goods transport. She instructed officials to prepare route maps for good carriers, identify congested areas, develop infrastructure such as truck terminals and loading bays, promote eco-friendly vehicles, and implement scheduled delivery time windows to save time, money, and prevent accidents.

A 17-member committee has been formed under the leadership of the Deputy Commissioner to draft the urban logistics plan. Members include the Police Commissioner, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Urban Development), Deputy Commissioner, State Tax Department, Chief Engineer, Punjab Pollution Control Board, Secretary, Regional Transport Authority (RTA Secretary), General Manager, District Industries Centre (GM DIC), District Town Planner, and officers from other departments. During the meeting, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Urban Development) Amandeep Kaur, Additional Commissioner Surinder Singh, Secretary, Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Khushdil Singh, General Manager, District Industries Centre (GM DIC) Manavpreet Singh, District Food and Supplies Controller (DFSC) Amanjeet Singh, and other senior officials were present.
