Speaking on the occasion, Harpartap Singh Ajnala, president of the District Congress Committee (Amritsar Rural), said the BJP-led Union Government betrayed the farmers. They made false promises during the farmers’ previous Delhi agitation and did not fulfill their demands.

“Now farmers are going to demonstrate for their demands in Delhi. The Constitution gives the citizen the right to freedom of expression. The farmers were heading towards Delhi peacefully, but the BJP-led Haryana Government stopped them by putting major brigades and treated them like people from some other country.

“The Congress is standing by the farmers against the atrocities by the BJP government and support their demands too. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi assured the farmers that after forming a government, he will implement the minimum support price on all crops,” said Harpartap Singh Ajnala.

Among others, senior Congress leaders Baghwantpal Singh Sachar, Tarsem Singh Sailka, Dilraj Singh Sarkaria, Kanwar Pratap Singh Ajnala, vice-president, DCC (Rural), Sarabjit Kaur, Mahila president (Rural), also addressed the congress activists.

Owing to the police barricading, the Congress leaders failed to reach outside the BJP office. Commuters witnessed long traffic jams due to the demonstration.

Protest at BJP office

Tarn Taran: Leaders and workers of the Congress party organised a protest demonstration in front of the district office of the BJP here on Friday. They were protesting against alleged authoritarianism committed against agitating farmers at Delhi borders during the last days of the protest.

Former MLA Harminder Singh Gill said the Union Government had failed to implement the promises made to the farmers at the time of Delhi morcha around two years ago. Gill said it was a matter of great satisfaction that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has assured that if the INDIA bloc came to power at the Centre, they must give legal guarantee to the MSP and nullify the three laws. Former MLA Sukhpal Singh Bhullar, Sukhwinder Singh Sidhu, former SGPC member, Maninderpal Singh Plasaur and Ranjit Singh Rana were among others who addressed on the occasion.
