Contaminated water supply sparks health scare in Tarn Taran

Residents of several localities in the holy city of Tarn Taran have been forced to consume sewage-contaminated water for years. Despite repeatedly approaching the authorities, their concerns remain unresolved.

Residents of Gali Walia Wali (in front of the Civil Hospital) said during the early morning and late evening hours, when the municipal council begins water supply, they rush to a water tap at the corner of the street where the water is comparatively less contaminated. The residents shared that although they pay regular water supply charges, they are still compelled to fetch water from a distance for household use.

The residents of the area reported frequent complaints of stomach-related illnesses and many have developed serious diseases such as hepatitis. People living near Gurdwara Khooh Bibi Bhani and other adjoining areas are also facing the same issue.

Dr Sukhdev Singh Lauhuka, former municipal councillor, said numerous water supply and sewerage pipelines are old and leaking. Due to seepage from multiple points, sewage is mixing with the water supply.

When contacted, Randeep Singh, Executive Officer (EO) of the municipal council, acknowledged the issue and said a plan is already in place to resolve the matter. He assured that the leakage in water and sewerage pipelines would be fixed soon.
