DC Ghanshyam Thori flags off a van to launch an awareness drive in Amritsar on Tuesday.

In an effort to comply with the orders of National Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding checking of stubble burning in fields, Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori flagged off a van to create awareness among farmers on the issue.

The van would visit areas such as Jandiala, Tarsikka and Verka where harvesting of paddy starts early. The DC said that the van would subsequently visit every village and educate farmers about the harms of burning crop residue.

Chief Agriculture Officer Dr Tajinder Singh also appealed to the farmers not to burn the stubble of paddy crop. He said that a large number of essential nutrients in the soil also get burnt along with the residue. These vans are being operated by the agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department.
