Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney visited villages along the Ravi river in the Ajnala area this morning to assess the situation following a rise in water levels due to heavy rainfall in the hilly regions.

The inspection covered villages including Ghonewala, Chandigarh Post, Kamalpur and Kot Rajada, where officials examined the Dhussi embankment. The Deputy Commissioner also interacted with local residents to understand their concerns.

Speaking to the media, DC Sawhney explained that the increase in water levels in the Ravi is due to rising water in the Ujh river. “Water is flowing faster than usual in the Ajnala and Ramdass areas, but the situation is not dangerous at the moment,” she said. She added that the situation is being closely monitored and teams have been on duty since last night.

She also stated that weak spots along the riverbank are being strengthened. In Ghonewala village, a safe site has already been identified for possible evacuation, if needed. At present, the Ujh river is carrying approximately 1.4 lakh cusecs of water, which is well below the danger mark.

Although the Ravi may touch the Dhussi embankment, it is still flowing within safe limits and there is no cause for panic, Sawhney added. The area will remain on high alert for the next two days, with emergency teams stationed on duty round-the-clock.

When asked about the Beas river, the DC confirmed that there is no threat and the water level is currently receding.

Other officials who accompanied the Deputy Commissioner included SSP Maninder Singh, DSP Baljinder Singh Khaira, SDM Sanjeev Kumar, District Revenue Officer Navkirat Singh and District Panchayat Officer Sandeep Malhotra.
