Employee attempts to sneak cellphones into Amritsar Central Jail, held

A jail employee was caught red-handed by officials while attempting to smuggle mobile phones into Central Jail under the pretext of serving tea at Fatahpur today. The suspect was identified as Jagdeep Singh of the Punjab Ex-servicemen Corporation (PESCO).

Jail Superintendent Hemant Sharma said a contractual employee of PESCO identified as Jagdeep Singh arrived at the prison gate while carrying a tea kettle.

As part of routine security checks, on-duty staff, including Assistant Superintendent Prabhdyal Singh, head warder Harjeet Kumar Peti and constable Sukhwinder Singh, conducted a thorough search of Jagdeep Singh.

During search, two mobile phones and two chargers were found hidden inside kettle the suspect was carrying. Officials immediately informed their seniors and the local police station in Islamabad. The confiscated mobile phones were handed over to the police for initiating further legal proceedings.

Jail Superintendent Hemant Sharma said strict inspection campaigns were being conducted inside jail following directives from Punjab Chief Minister, Jail Minister and Additional Director General of Police (Prisons), Chandigarh. He said intelligence units were being deployed to identify and remove corrupt elements within the prison staff.
