Encroachments, plastic use to be curbed on Heritage Street

Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney inspected the Heritage Street on Saturday, issuing a stern warning to shopkeepers regarding encroachments and the use of plastic. She gave a one-week deadline to comply, warning that strict action would be taken after the grace period.

The Heritage Street, which leads to the Golden Temple, has been adopted by the Deputy Commissioner for maintenance under the city’s clean street initiative. During the inspection, she emphasised making the area more accessible and clean for devotees and tourists.

The Deputy Commissioner instructed the Municipal Corporation officials to clear debris lying in the old vegetable market and convert the space into a proper parking area. She also directed the relocation of dustbins from near the statue and decorative fountain in Heritage Street and to install new, aesthetically placed bins to maintain cleanliness.

Sawhney also issued directions to the committee of Aggarwal Mandir to cooperate in cleanliness efforts and other civic matters. Furthermore, she suggested the development of a fountain or a creative structure outside the Dharam Singh Market, along with maintenance of the garden near Town Hall and ensuring the continuous operation of water ATMs.

In addition, the Deputy Commissioner also visited the Jallianwala Bagh held a meeting with officials to ensure proper upkeep and cleanliness of the memorial. She asked the Municipal Corporation to coordinate with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to implement rainwater harvesting and resolve other pending issues in Jallianwala Bagh.

SP Amandeep Kaur, District Health Officer Dr Kiran, Tourism Department official Sukhmandeep Singh and officials from various departments were also present.
