Speaking on the occasion, the organisation’s UBDC wing president Sukhdev Singh Umranangal and secretary Zorawar Singh said for the last 25 years, the Punjab Government has not recruited beldars, sewadars, postmen, regulation beldars and chowkidars working under Class-4 posts in the department.

On the contrary, the Bhagwant Mann government has completely abolished 8,635 posts of these categories and despite repeated requests, they are not being restored. “Due to this, not only has there been a huge shortage of Class-4 employees working on canals and state highways, but the government has also permanently taken away the employment of children from poor families,” said Umranangal.

The union leaders demanded that the 8,635 posts that were abolished should be immediately restored and new recruitments should be made and the vacant posts of gauge readers in every section of the department should be filled immediately. They also want a step up should be given as it is a technical post, rooms should be made for gauge readers at all heads and mates should be appointed in all sections of all subdivisions.
